Privacy policy

This explains what we collect when you use whateverb, why we collect it, who else sees it, and how to get it back or have it deleted. It is written to be read rather than to be survived.
Who is responsible

What we collect

What we do not collect
There is no analytics, no tracking pixel, no advertising network and no third-party script on this site. We do not build a profile of you for any purpose other than teaching you, we do not sell or share your data with anyone for marketing, and we never see your payment card.
The community
If you post in the community, what you write is public. It can be read by anyone, including people without an account, and it appears in search engines. Please do not post anything you would not want a stranger, a school, or an admissions officer to read — and if you are under 18, do not post anything that identifies you: your full name, your school, where you live, a phone number, photos, or your other accounts.
You post under a handle you choose. Your email address and the name on your account are never shown to anyone. We store your posts linked to your account so that you can edit and delete them and so that we can moderate — that link is never exposed to other users, including on posts you make anonymously. Posting anonymously hides your handle from other students; it does not hide you from us, because moderating would be impossible if it did.
If you report a post, we record that you reported it, so that reporting the same thing twice does not count twice.
Community pages are deliberately findable in search engines. Once a page has been indexed it may stay in a search engine’s cache for a while after you delete it. We can remove it from this site; we do not control anyone else’s copy of it.
Cookies
One cookie, set when you sign in, which keeps you signed in. It is strictly necessary for the site to work and is not used for tracking. Some of your preferences — your explanation language, for instance — are kept in your browser’s own storage and never reach us.
Who else sees it
We use a small number of service providers, each doing one job:
- Supabase — stores the database and runs sign-in.
- Vercel — hosts and serves the site.
- PayPal — takes payment. Your card details go to PayPal, never to us. PayPal keeps its own record of the transaction under its own policy.
- Anthropic — generates some study material (word profiles and passage background notes). Your personal data is not sent to it; the input is the vocabulary or passage being explained.
We do not sell your data, and we do not give it to anyone else except where the law requires it.
Where it is stored
Our providers operate internationally, so your data may be stored or processed outside the country you live in, including in the United States. Where the law requires a safeguard for that transfer, we rely on our providers’ standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. Delete your account and we delete your answers, progress, notes, saved words, goals, subscription record, handle and community posts. That is immediate and it cannot be undone. Because a discussion cannot be read once the question has gone, deleting a thread you started also deletes the replies other people left on it. PayPal keeps its own transaction records, as payment processors are required to; we cannot delete those.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can:
- See what we hold — ask us and we will send it to you.
- Correct it — your name, target score and test date are editable in the app; write to us for anything else.
- Delete it — from your account page, at any time, without asking us. Any subscription is cancelled first so you are not charged again.
- Object, or withdraw consent — by deleting your account or writing to us.
If you are in the UK or the EU you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority. We would rather you told us first, but it is your right either way.
Age
This is a study product for people preparing for the Digital SAT, so many of the people using it are under 18. If you are under 16 — or under whatever age counts as a child where you live — please ask a parent or guardian before creating an account, and they are welcome to contact us on your behalf about anything on this page.
Changes
If we change this, we will change the date at the top. If the change is significant, we will tell you rather than relying on you noticing.
